Cage Fighting
What adjustments would a fighter need to make while fighting in a cage or a Ring?
is there any obvious differences a fighter would change about their style of fighting? How would fighting in a cage or ring change a fighters game plan? if any
The most successful MMA fighters in the world are very effective at using the cage. Personally, I hate fighting in a ring (rope ring like boxing) unless it’s a purely stand up fight (boxing or kickboxing). In a purely stand up fight, it’s great to get someone on the ropes or in a corner and take away their escapes, but for an MMA match, it’s a pain in the butt to have the ref keep stopping the fight to bring guys back to the center of the ring.
Cages are an entirely different animal. Cages are a weapon as well as a shield. Hexagon or octagon cages don’t have corners, so it’s almost impossible to trap someone with strikes, but clinching against the cage and delivering knees to an upright fighter is brutal. On the ground, keeping someone pressed against the cage can work to your advantage sometimes to prevent them escaping your hold, OR, alternatively, the cage can help you escape if your find yourself on the bottom of a fight.
Learning the proper techniques on how to use the cage for different aspects of your game takes time, and some players like to use the cage in different ways. My MMA style is focused on ground and pound, so I don’t usually like to stand guys up against the cage in the clinch. I know how to do it if I need to, but sometimes guys can back up against the cage to prevent being taken down, so I usually try to get a guy on the ground out in the open then push his head up against the cage so he can’t run then pound his face in. Some guys with a strong Muay Thai game like to use the cage to keep a guy on his feet instead of taking the fight to the mat, so they can pound punches and clinch knees with a guy pressed up against the cage.
It really depends on your fighting style and your preferences as a fighter, but yes, the cage is a total game changer.
Edit: I guess “heyguys…” has trouble with reading comprehension, since he obvisouly missed my statement “OR, alternatively, the cage can help you escape if your find yourself on the bottom of a fight”… Maybe he needed me to spell out for him how to wall walk? Then again, he’s not the first 15yr old punk to sling insults around to make himself feel cool.
