Martial Arts Headgear
Hapkido/other martial arts?
Does anyone know if there are styles of Hapkido that don’t emphasize sparring with headgear? Also, would it be a good combination to study say, Aikido and fitness kickboxing?
I used to train in Shorin-Ryu and we never used any gear when sparring. We also didn’t land blows to the head and went 50% to the body. I can’t speak for Hapkido, but when I see people sparring with headgear I can only figure it’s to practice for some sporting event that requires headgear to compete. I think it’s counter-productive since you will not likely be wearing a padded helmet when you are in a situation where you have to defend yourself.
What is your training goal? Fitness? In that case cardio KB, TKD, Billy Blanks, whatever is fine. Is your goal self-defense? In that case uh, I would avoid “fitness” anything. Maybe look into Judo and Thai KB for a well-rounded grappling/striking skillset. If you’re interested in martial arts as a philosophy then Aikido, Japanese jiu-jitsu or Okinawan karate (ie: Shorin/Goju/Uechi-ryu) is heavily steeped in the martial aspect.
