Mixed Martial Equipment
Which mouthguard would you all recommend plus other equipment?
I just started training in boxing, kickboxing, and Mixed Martial Arts. Which mouthguard would you all recommend. My mouth is not the straigtest so I would have to mold my own right? What kind of cup would you recommend as well? And what kind of Shind guards would you recommend? Also what is a Rashguard? Is it worth it? They look like tight shirts?
Mouth Guard – I like the Brain Pad Pro Double- it covers both top and bottom teeth. It’s hard to talk through but it words great for me. It is a “boil and bite” style, which means you boil it in hot water, then put it in your mouth and mash it up against your teeth to “customize” it. It’s not perfect, but it works fairly well. You may need a custom one for competition, but Brain Pad will be fine for training.
As far as a cup, I like to wear compression shorts with a cup rather than a jock strap. I wear Under Armour and Shock Doctor – They both fit comfortably and work fine for me, so either brand is good.
Shin Guards – I wear Throwdown (Title MMA) but there are lots of good ones – Fairtex are great but expensive, and Revgear are really easy to put on and take off. Some guys swear by Tapout, but I think they are overpriced.
A rashguard IS basically a tight shirt that you would wear for grappling mainly. It keeps things from rubbing against your skin while rolling. (The mat can rub against you causing “mat-rash” or “mat burn” – guards help to minimize it.) Also, if you do MMA “no gi” tshirts can get torn, pulled, etc. so wearing a tight shirt is good. I wear my rash guard when I’m grappling with a gi, too – it keeps the gi from chafing so much. I have Under Armour and Rupture rash guards. Rupture is AWESOME and way cheaper than most other ones that I’ve tried on (it’s about $30.00 and really well made.) I recommend a rash guard, but it’s not essential.
