Mma Affliction Card
How is it that boxing events don’t have the money issues that mma events do?
Certainly big time boxing promoters have more money to spend than mma promoters at this time, but I was reading the write up on the Affliction card yesterday where the financial equations are obviously a big issue. The article said that the promoter of the event needed 250,000 ppv buys to break even on his last event- now why wouldn’t boxing cards need the same (or likely many more)?
I don’t get how Mosley and Margarito can fight on free HBO with a payout that has to be upwards of at least $10 M, yet not have any financial issues at all. With no ppv money coming in, I don’t see how boxing funds these cards when mma is obviously having such problems.
I don’t know much about MMA and its financial situation so I can’t comment too much. I can say that HBO is a well established player in the boxing game. They have a huge budget for boxing, so they can afford to put on such boxing shows.
Also, last night was a testament to the largely exaggerated claim that boxing is dying. Sure it has its struggles, but it has been on the rise these last three years. Such a fight was able to attract the largest crowd ever to attend a Staples Center event. Much larger than a Lakers game and of course a Clippers game. On a somewhat related note, HBO really messed up on the celebrity pan shots. I know they briefly showed a few, but I know there had to of been way more Hollywood stars and Boxing stars in attendance. I can understand not showing Arnold(due to some rowdy booing) but by showing other celebrities, it only helps to promote future fights.
