how long does it take to advance belts in brazilian jiu jitsu?
i moved from a nogi school where i took mma to a gi school where i take bjj and im a white belt at 15, i know good defense but little offense and was wondering how long it would take me to advance to yellow, or blue?
You won’t be eligible for blue belt until you’re 16. Since you’re already 15, your instructor probably won’t use the “kids” belt ranking system for you. BJJ is one of the hardest arts to earn rankings in, since belts are awarded according to both technical proficiency, as well as performance in competition.
The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation sets up standards for how long guys SHOULD take to advance. The limitations start with the blue belt, a grappler must be 16 before earning their blue belt. If you would have started earlier, you COULD have earned your purple belt at 16, but IBJJF requires that you spend 2yrs (14-16) as a green belt before turning 16 to earn a purple. Then, a grappler is required to spend 2yrs as a blue belt before advancing to purple, then a year and a half as a purple before advancing to brown, then a year as a brown before advancing to black.
So technically, since you started at 15, if you are very competent technically and do well in competition, you could earn your blue belt at 16. Then be purple at 18, brown at 20, and black by 21.
However, that’s the absolute MINIMUM time allowed by the rules. Typically, jiu jitsu players that train 3+ days per week will take 10yrs to advance to black belt, with 1-2yrs as white, 1-2yrs as blue, 2-4yrs as purple, and 2-3yrs as brown.
Since you started as a white belt, you probably will NOT be advance to yellow belt. It sounds like your instructor skipped the “kids” belt rankings for you, and threw you into the adult ranking mix. The bad news is that just because you turn 16, that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically become a blue belt… You could mire around in white-belt world for years unless you actually earn your stripes (literally) and earn your rankings.
