How much do boxing gloves hurt compared to MMA gloves?
Boxing gloves are so much bigger than MMA gloves, it seems like they probably aren’t able to do as much damage.
To anyone who has trained boxing and MMA, which hurts more?
The padding in boxing gloves is actually kind of nonexistent to a real fighter. I can’t count how many times I’ve felt knuckles on my face or my knuckles on another guy’s face, even with my hands wrapped and with 14oz boxing gloves on. I don’t mean I felt a really sturdy impact, I mean I actually felt the bone-grinding sensation of knuckle on skull, as if the gloves and wraps weren’t there at all. This is coming from the perspective of myself (a Light Heavyweight), a few Heavyweights I’ve sparred with, and a Super Heavyweight I sparred with once upon a time. So, for someone in a lower weight class, or a fighter that just throws “punches in bunches”, the padding in boxing gloves might actually mean something to you. But, if you’re a powerful striker and are throwing a hay maker or any kind of solid shot really, you’re not going to notice the padding too much.
My point being, as far as the softening of blows goes, I don’t think padding-wise there’s any significant difference. The real difference is in the weight. Yes, boxing gloves are heavier. However, that doesn’t mean that you’ll hit harder with boxing gloves. Boxing gloves will actually weigh your hands down more, slowing your strikes. And loss of speed means loss of power. MMA gloves being so much lighter means you can swing much faster.
To summarize, MMA gloves will hurt more, but the padding has very little to do with it; it’s the weight that makes the difference. That’s my perception anyway.
