MMA Shorts Things to Consider

Selecting the right kind of MMA Shorts is essential. Fight Shorts, Board Shorts, Grappling Shorts, Muay Thai Shorts- you need to get the right kind of shorts if you are a fighter. Features should be one of the most important things to look for.

Split Outer Seam

A split outer seam allows unrestricted movement with grappling and also when throwing a kick. In the heat of battle the last thing you need is yours legs getting caught in your shorts when you are rolling or your kicks hindered by long shorts.

Fabric

The fabric, believe it or not, is also very important. Micro-Fiber (a fancy name for Polyester) is probably the best material. Polyester is smooth and does not bind like cotton. Sweat is not absorbed by Micro-Fiber like it is with cotton. When cotton gets wet it is going to stick to your body.

Adjustable Waist Band

When you go down to the ground, a tight fit in the waist is important. Just about every pair of MMA shorts comes with a draw string but some of the higher-end shorts, like Hayabusa, have a rubbery inner waist band. This better grips your waist preventing the shorts from twisting around!

Coolness Factor

OK. Yes, MMA shorts have to look cool too. Lets face it- how many MMA fighters still wear the dorky Speedo-Type shorts any more… There are about a billion short makers out there and a few make good performing shorts that look cool too!

Length and Baggy

The longer shorts are and the more stylish and the less baggy- the less nerdy you look. The long the shorts are the more they are going to bind-up on you legs and restrict movement. With baggy shorts, you will have a greater range of motion when grappling. Try to find something in between.

Inner Leg Seam

When competing, you need to give yourself every advantage. You can even take a small thing like the inner seam of your shorts and make it an advantage. There are now shorts, like Century’s, that are not only more breathable, but also have some grip. This provides a more stable grip on an opponent when in the guard position.
