how to overcome fear of taekwondo sparring?
hello, im a 12 yo taekwondoin in indonesia, i just got my yellow belt last month, n i have a problem about sparring, i contsantly get scared whe me n my opponent r on the ring… i know, it sucks, n guess what? MY UNCLE IS THE SABEUM NIM! N HE CAME ALL THE WAY FROM THE OTHER PART OF THE ISLAND TO WATCH ME N I BLEW IT! TOTALLY BLEW IT WHEN THE OPPONENT KICK MY BUTT!! i mean, i do well in kicks n physic.. but my mental needs a lot of work, anybody knows how to overcome my fear? coz im not gonna give up taekwondo just like that
The ONLY way to overcome fear in the ring or on the mat is spend more time there. The more you spar the more comfortable you get. If you have the opportunity to spar opponents of your choosing, keep in mind that it is wise to spar both senior and junior opponents as well those at your own level. Sparing senior students will help you see what you should do. Pay attention to how they capitalize on your mistakes. When you spar juniors, you can try techniques and strategies that you are not yet comfortable with using on people at your own level. (New kicking combinations, new footwork, etc.) Most importantly however, ALWAYS REMEMBER, you learn more from looking in the ring then you do from winning. You need to loose in order to get better. Every ‘natural’ who was good as sparing from the get go ends up fizzling and topping out. On the other hand, those that have to work at it and build their skills tend to develop further. Just ask Chuck Norris or any number of other world class fighters that have lasted. They’ll tell you they WORKED HARD for everything the earned. If you put your mind to it, you can too.
