Ufc 60 Results Fight Night

by chance does anyone know the results of Royce Grace verces Matt Hughes in last nights fight in UFC 60?

Here’s my play by play of the fight.

Going into the fight we new each fighter had their own advantages. Royce is an expert technician on the ground with dangerous submissions. Hughes is powerful and well rounded.

To win, Hughes’ strategy was most likely to avoid going to the ground for as long as possible, while wearing Royce out on his feet. From the ground, Hughes’ goal would be to protect himself from submissions and wear on him with the ground and pound.

To prepare for the fight Royce worked on his striking skills. He knew that Matt was a well rounded fighter and that he would need to be prepared to face off against him in a striking match until he could take it to the ground. On ground he is a much more technical fighter, but without a gi he knew he would have a harder time defending himself from the ‘ground and pound’ attack of Hughes.

The fight started off as expected. Royce showed that he had worked on his striking while Matt avoided the double leg take down that he usually attacked other opponents with. A few minutes in the fighters got into a clench and Matt took Royce down to a side mount, giving himself a good advantage. He worked to keep the pressure on Royce using his elbows while Royce kept a strong defense and worked to slip in his guard.

Matt got an arm lock on Royce, but Royce was able to slip in a half guard to take away his leverage. That combined with his flexibility kept Matt from submitting him. From here the fight took a surprising turn. Matt was able to pass Royce’s guard and return to the superior side mount. I think that Royce was too relaxed in letting him do this. He was probably over confident in his ability to control the fight from the ground.

From there Royce made yet another mistake. In an attempt to turn Matt he slipped off and gave him his back. It was an incredibly sloppy move for someone of his experience. You could see in his face how disappointed he was with himself after the fight. From there Matt pounded on the back of Royce’s head until the fight was called.

I’d like to see a rematch of the fight. Matt definitely controlled the fight, but I was disappointed to see Royce lose by making such a careless mistake. I think that he was over confident in his superiority on the ground, and would likely fight a more careful match if given another chance.
