FANS MAKE THE SPORT!!!!!!!!!! MMA vs BOXING, the real questions?
imagine if you will if Boxing was run like MMA, the promoter has fighters signed exclusively to the WBA, which woud mean that the sanctioning bodies would only offer title fights to fighters under the WBA banner, there is no possibilty for unification fights because that would mean the organization would go under, or be brought out, UFC is monopolizing the sport and we as fans stand for it, they have there own champions as do Strickeforce etc etc, the best lightweights to heavyweights will never fight each other its just impossible, we complain about to many champions in boxing but MMA is worse, every-other damm state has thier own version of a world title, MMA is the sport, not UFC, etc. and by the way YAHOO your not much help, on your sports page you list Boxing, Baseball, etc and then for MMA you use UFC as the title, how much is Danna White paying you.
MMA learned a few lessons from professional wrestling (and I won’t get into the “professional wrestling’s not a sport” debate here– focus on the business side of it!)
Pro wrestling promoter Vince McMahon basically revolutionized the industry when he started running a national “territory.” In the old days, you had a very territorial system similar to boxing. Read up on the National Wrestling Alliance at Wikipedia and you’ll see what I mean (see sources for link). Well, McMahon didn’t like the politicking and limited scope of the regional NWA system, and he saw a huge opportunity to create a standalone entity that would have “worldwide” status based on its lack of territorial boundaries.
MMA promoters have taken this business model and applied it to their sport. They all have their own “world champions.” This eliminates much of the regional politicking and hostage-holding of world titles/champions commonly seen in boxing, making the sport more accessible and appealing to fans.
The MMA promotions also took a page from pro wrestling’s playbook in how they all try to attract the best fighters to draw new fans to their particular promotion. If a heavyweight championship contender moved from the WWE to its closest rival, TNA Wrestling, it would be a big story and would probably make new people start tuning in for TNA’s programs on TV– much like Strikeforce would gain a larger following if a popular UFC fighter jumped ship to them.
I actually think boxing would work better, as a business intended to draw fans, if it were run more like MMA and pro wrestling. It’s got to get away from the politics that have kept it largely in the casinos and banquet halls of the world and get back into the 20,000-seat arenas if we expect it to survive as a for-profit sport. Otherwise, it’ll be relegated to Olympic competition.
