Do you think BJJ is overrated?
I love BJJ as well as karate and hapkido, but I think when people ask how to defend themselves in the streets one on one, advisers would say take BJJ lessons. But I was just thinking, in such a fight, before you even make your opponent submit (if you can submit a stronger and bigger opponent) you will be punished by lots of punches from all directions and MIGHT NOT be able to do the submission techniques or might no longer be conscious because of the many punches you already got while trying to position yourself and submit the guy.
You will say, Royce Gracie was able to do that with a wrestler twice his size in UFC, but the problem with that was they both wear MMA gloves which lessen the punch impact, and they wrestler was quite slow and not throwing punches. The youtube videos of the Gracies challenging the Kenpo Karate expert, the Kungfu and the TKD expert is flawed because those experts DIDN’T throw a single punch and they let themselves be taken down by the Gracies.
I’m a BJJ practitioner and I’m going to say that so far of the two times that I have had a fight while going for BJJ I really barely used my BJJ aside from being able to hold the guy down. I didn’t want to go to the ground because of the concrete and I didn’t want to do something crazy like pull guard because I may screw my back up or hit my head or something along those lines.
In a fight, I really just try to hit the guy. Luckily I took Kung Fu and some Muay Thai when I was younger and so I have a good idea on how to actually hurt someone with a few kicks and punches. The closest thing I can think of from those two fights (First, there was a big frat jock trying to show off his MMA moves on me and second some guy tried to mug me) was when I slammed the mugger onto the side of a nearby parked car a few times. That wouldn’t be BJJ that I guess would be wrestling because they were actually me lifting him up and slamming him as hard as I can.
Like I said, I practice BJJ for the fun of it. In the streets I wouldn’t employ many BJJ moves because they aren’t really practical because you have concrete, maybe some broken glass, things of that nature. Aside from that, I wouldn’t want to normally be too close to the guy in case he has a weapon.
