A couple questions about fighting leagues like UFC, MMA…?

Which league is most prominent and will one out do the other or are they equal and why?

The sport is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a promotional company (or league, if you will) that produces MMA events. So that pretty much answers your first question. The UFC is the most prominent MMA company in the West, and probably the world.

Pro MMA is legal in California and most other states. Only a few states have banned MMA outright, although some do not regulate it, and some only allow for pro matches (not amateur). Right now New York, West Virginia, and Michigan have bans on MMA, and probably a few other states too, but Southern California is actually a hotbed for MMA.

The question about gear and gyms are kind of intertwined. Many gyms will provide you with borrowed equipment, or perhaps allow you to purchase materials through them. To buy stuff on your own, just look on line for MMA gloves, focus mitts, etc. You will need a cup, a mouthguard, MMA sparring gloves (they have more protection than competitive gloves), shin guards, and maybe boxing gloves and head gear, depending upon what your gym requires.

You must definitely find a gym. If you’re new to martial arts in general, trying to learn through videos won’t help you. You need a coach or two that knows what he’s doing. Just look for MMA gyms near your zip code. Some Judo, Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ), and kickboxing gyms also have MMA teams, so check out those, too.
